Five offline RPGs that survive a long flight

October 2, 2026 · Mareike Vogt

A long flight is the best time for an RPG and the worst time to discover yours needs a login. I've been burned by this enough to keep a tested list.

Emberhold Saga is the standout — a full turn-based campaign that never phones home after the download. The writing is strong enough that I forgot I was on a plane. It's my first pick for a trip.

Beyond that, look for battery-friendly art and clean save systems. A gorgeous RPG that drains your phone in ninety minutes is useless at 30,000 feet. Turn-based games tend to fare better here than real-time ones.

Charge fully, download over Wi-Fi the night before, and check the game runs in airplane mode before you leave. Ten minutes of testing saves a boring flight.
